Still making my way through the games here, but there have been a few that have set the bar for what can be done in a VN.

Easy recommendations:

Depraved Awakening - Great art, great writing, great characters, great nior atmosphere.
Acting Lessons - Great art, great writing, great characters (Liam is the Bro of Bros), really effective story telling.
The DeLuca Family - Great art, great writing, interesting story mechanics. Not finished, but really can't wait to see where it ends up.
Sisterly Lust - turning into one of my favorite Family Fun games, plus it caters to all my kinks.

(Later edit.) Oh, I was supposed to say why. Well, the AIF games demonstrated that plots didn't have to be on rails; that games where choices mattered and still led to sex could exist, which was not something that most other AIF games promoted. It was usually "make the right choice or don't get laid." Unfortunately, the coding (and the very early, utterly groundbreaking work with images) eventually broke GoblinBoy, and despite a little teasing in 2015 it looks like he's retired for good.

The latter two were among the games that convinced me of something of which I was previously doubtful: that there were people with narrative ambitions and people with rendering skill, but that they were never the same people.

Harem Hotel - very animeish, i feel like anime protagonist, a hentai anime protagonist
Mythic Manor - average story telling, but the girls are hot, especially Nefari and Jade,
Corruption - meh writing, above average character design, but the sheer lewdness and lust this game radiate is overwhelming

"Explosive way" should've given it away. It's a finished game now, but what I would've said about it 2/3 of the way through and what I'd say about it now are very, very different.

It's gotta be Fruit of Grisaia (Grisaia no Kajitsu).

It's non-magical, non-fantasy, but it has plenty of comedy, intrigue, conspiracy, darkness, and sexiness to keep me coming back to it.
The story is about a guy name Yuuji Kazami (if that isn't protag-kun af) and he's a hired cleaner, but just wants a normal school life because he was denied it all throughout his life. So he goes to this private school full of girls for some reason.

The thing that drew me in is how his story actually interlocks with the stories of each girl, and each path--some more than others, some less--but they all have something more to do with him under the surface.

mmh. personnaly i m not very into all thoses super popular games like "being a dick" or else.
i mean, i very like them, they are awesome. but for me the best game are not like this.

1 - wild life (actually the best full 3D game around )
2 - Every game from Auril (blue is better, red hood, joyous reunion etc... also some great full 3D games)
3 - Honey select (full 3d games, japan style hentai stuff)
4 - Star Channel 34 (Akabur, great art and humour)
5 - Waifu sex simulator (3D sandbox free game , just for chill seing sexy girls dancing or having sex. work with and without VR)
6 - Summertime saga (Loved it, but i m less and less fan of the characters implented, too much fake for my taste)

just to mention, that i m very big fan of game that are full 3D and allow customizations, for me, that 's the 2 points i love. even if not 3D, as long they are customization in it, i will like it.

oh i forgot that i can also add "adventure of Willy D" from Nenad Asanovic (hope i write it good XD)
wich is a nice 3D-2D game with great graphism, interactivity, story and content (very huge in size, each update add like 500+ Mb each time, but worth it imho)

I love that game, but I dont think I'd put it in my top 10 at all, and sadly its not even for any fault of Belle (the dev) but thanks to the dude that does the Walkthrough... his old walkthrough had the players "bang" the MC's sister on day 30, and she got written out of the story with no way to come back as of now (8 updates later)...

He has since corrected the walkthrough so that you dont make the MC bang her till she is "ready"... However the fact that the game is very "master detective clue" style of playing, restarting and losing 30 days takes a toll... i havent been able to restart it at all instead just messing around with my borked save...

Also the WT is still messed up in that he never specifies if Harem is at all possible, or what consequences are for choosing to "date" a girl, does that stop a romance with the other girls ? who knows... he lets you play it yourself, and make mistakes so that if you screwed up you have to start over... YAY... (This isnt me being entitled either, if it didnt have a WT I'd be save-scumming like crazy, but the main appeal of a WT is to keep you from fucking up your game, and going perfectly down the route that appeals to you).

As for my current top 10 its hard to say as they move around a lot, but here are ten games I still enjoy in no order...

Milfy City - One of the best incest stories ever told, as Linda is the aggresor there, and it makes sense, its not what tools like to claim from incest game "mom sees son's dick in shower and wants to fuck him"... oh no Linda has been attracted to the MC since he was 12, and has groomed him till he was legal into her idea of a perfect mate for her (that's dedication) before she makes her move.

Depraved Awakening - While I always found Noir stories pretentious as all fuck (the fans dont help with stupid crap about how "your not smart enough to get it" BS they spout), but this one was very down to earth and enjoyable, multiple endings so that you can pick and choose who you want the MC to end up with in case you hated the female protagonist LOL.

Dreaming of Dana - this one is one of my most favorite games ever, Ptolemy made me enjoy fetishes I never thought I would even take a 2nd glance at (submission and domination, swinging, and age regression), they are all crafted masterfully in this tale thanks to very likable characters.

Coceter Chronicles - while abandoned and incomplete, this story was fascinating, perhaps the only female protagonist corruption game done right in this entire site ! No BS of old, black, fat dudes raping and blackmailing the protag, Tabby chooses when and who she fucks every single time !! No points system either to "lock you out" of scenes you want to see if you didnt choose to let a disgusting scene happen.

Triangle - currently ongoing, but I appreciate a love story with no hints of NTR, or any of the more savage fetishes even being thought of. Its also perhaps one of the only poly-amorous games where its not a Harem, but an actual consensual relationship between all involved !

Retrieving the Past - I like the game, the story might seem cheesy to some, but I grew up in the 80s, cheese is my favorite food and entertainment ! Asta la vista Baby !! Beautiful girls, a handsome MC for a change, and a story involving super soldiers and a government conspiracy.

Ecchi Sensei - The models may not be for some, as its using Playmate models (Illusion models before Honey Select), but the story is off the wall bonkers, and with 72 female characters to have sex with and growing, its hard to not follow this crazyness !

Life with Mary - another love story with not a single "hard" fetish so far, I appreciate it for what it is, a tale of a young girl falling for a middle age man, and the trouble that goes with it.

Freeloading Family - This one I like the story, but LOVE the female models, especially the main girl Alice, she is in my top 10 possibly top 5 favorite females in VN so far ! FCcreations has a gift for giving his girls "bedroom eyes", to the point you cant help feeling seduced by the vixens in this game.

Siserly Lust - Tons of content, tons of choices, and a story of a young man seducing his estranged family consisting of three sisters and their mom, very likable characters, very fluid progression, the humor and writing are very good in this one.

With respect, you seem a little tied to the walk through. There has not been one in a while. The game is not too challenging. and that part of the fun, the almost stumble-upon, "wow this is happening!! ". The slight effort is worth it. [I've been grinding at Bright Past, good, but not nearly nearly as much fun]

The twist because the protagonist eats ass, 2nd playthrough is such a pain in the ass though.
Fleeting iris because it seems pretty realistic and it's always hot and it doesn't waste too much of your time.
Princess trainer/witch trainer/four elements trainer, always had a thing for Jasmine before the internet even existed and trainergames are awesome.
A Soldier's life: another trainergame and this one's graphics are kinda meh but the writing is great. slows down the training to a more "realistic" level.
Goodgirlgonebad: alot of fucked up fetishes other games would be affraid to touch, non-stop updates, good story with endless decision-making that really matters.
Urban Demons: I like games where protagonist has the option to be a nice guy or an asshole. Also big boobs and mrs jennings.

Honorable mentions:
Incubus city, taffy tales, claire's quest, summertime saga.

Harem in dark path - when druidic/elf sect tried to save one of your slaves from MC, he allies himself with their enemies and raids their forest village in revange, consequentialy burning it to the ground. Next level evil warlord roleplaying.
Timestop when i first seen the renders and My cute cousin also for the art. Games aren't that great.
Waifu Academy at the start but now is just mediocare and unorginal.
Taffy Tales has potential to be good game.

personally, I absolutely hate the graphical style of games like "Anna exciting affection" and the VN genre of porn games (I can be lenient if the VN has some real good scenes and I don't have to go through 2 hours of dialogue to see them) and I don't like grindy HTML games where you have to progress the game by clicking links for days to get a PNG sex scene that I could have just looked up "PNG sex scenes" and gotten them probably (some hidden gem HTML games tho like Lost in Laminate that actually have a captivating world that I am invested in) Not saying any porn games are bad (though some definitely are of lower quality) just not my type, I never really see people get into action porn games, ones that are either RPG maker games with turn based combat (and combat scenes/BDSM and stuff) or platformers/sidescrollers like Ayura Crisis, not seeing many here.

I've got to add "Defending Lydia Collier" to my list. It's one of the few VNs with an actually adult MC which is so nice. Of course, he gets all the ladies, but he treats them respectfully and actually knows how to flirt. And the story is actually quite intruiging, especially for a porn game. I love how the MC gets portrayed as someone with a normal life. He's got a job, he plays rugby with his friends, he bets on sports and he loves hanging out in the pub. We need more games like this. I'm sick of "20 year old horse dick dude now lives with his step-mom after daddy died" games.

Karryn's Prison; cutting edge porn gameplay worth experiencing. Try it. You won't regret it.

Kingdom of Deception; already mentioned. The game does a lot of things wrong unfortunately, but did a lot of things right that are worth experiencing. This game is a tragedy though, it starts out great, but descends into an incoherent mess. But what it does right, is sooo good, it makes it worth playing.

These are overall good games that I think anyone can enjoy, no matter what they're into, unless you're only into wholesome Harem stuff, the above two games I mentioned should entertain you.
