Why does Patreon keep banning creators?

Many of game creators in this forum have been banned by Patreon, but at the same time, famous creators like Helius seem to be unaffected. What is the reason for this?

a) iiuc. payment processing companies force them to
(they are doing this since decades in various fields they/ dogmatic shareholder pressure groups deem "immoral" - porn/ some porn, drugs, abortion, ...)

b) some titles got to Patreon's attention (being reported, I assume), others not.

I like that they do it actually. It's not often you will see a company turn down profits in order to do the right thing, so if they're on a roll with trying to keep Patreon clean then fair play.

Though at some point it will no doubt be abused and will replace morality with a more authoritarian outlook.

They will start banning users who make games with realistic AI.

This thread title should be: "Why does creators continue to use Patreon to fund games having content that Patreon's Terms of Service forbid".

Patreon do nothing else that enforcing their rules, most being a bit more than 7 years old. It's not their fault if, over the , a handful do not care enough about their business model to read those rules and apply them.

It's not because those creators starts to cry when they are banned, that they are actually victims. They did this on themselves and all by themselves.

[Sorry for the double post]

They will start banning users who make games with realistic AI.
They ban the funding of tools that permit to produce 18+ AI generated content, or provide AI virtual girlfriend:
"Accounts that primarily allow access to generators, tools, or software that use machine learning or AI technology to produce 18+ nudity or explicit imagery are not permitted on, and may not be funded through, Patreon. Offering fans access to AI-driven Adult/18+ chatbots, sexbots, or virtual girlfriend/boyfriend-type experiences that incorporate user-generated content (e.g. image generation or manipulation) is also not permitted."
.

But realistic AI is treated as real humans :
"References to humans in the below guidelines apply to depictions of real humans as well as photorealistic representations of humans including those that were computer- or artificial intelligence-generated."

Except that is not what it says.

The short and simple is pretty much:

No live porn.
No minors in compromising situations (live and fictional).
No bestiality (live and fictional).
No nonconsensual content (live and fictional).*
No incest content (live and fictional).*

* Case by case basis, but definitely not for sexually gratifying content.

Whatever dude.

The person you replied to was talking about Patreon's actions to ban creators who do not follow Patreon's TOS. Ergo, it would follow that you would be responding to that person's points and your response does seem to do just that.

The person you replied to was talking about Patreon's morality system.
You then replied about a morality system.
I then pointed out that what you stated is not Patreon's morality system.

If you weren't doing that, but going off on a tangent - don't whine when I tie in your response to the previous person's post back to the previous person's post.

What does that have to do with my post? How does that in any way make for a more coherent system of morality?
Money. If it's not about the money, maybe the Patreon's CEO doesn't like that kind of content. When you own a company, you can make your own rules that goes in terms with the law ofc. It's not that deep.

Because they're cunts :cautious:
they don't care enough to be cunts. it's just work to put bread on the table for censors, who do what the bosses tell them to do, and the bosses execute whatever the board agrees with the credit card companies to keep their business. none of them give a fuck about us or the content of our patreon projects.

even the CCC probably only do it because their religious conservative shareholders have enough shares to push them. they don't really care.

So it could be about money or it could be about something completely unrelated to money. Thanks, very insightful.

Considering you haven't added anything constructive or insightful to the discussion and only tried picking at people guesses, interpretations, your "Thanks, very insightful." seems more than a little ironic....

As others have already said, it's the dev's fault.

If you search around the site you will find a number of threads from people trying to find ways to "get around" / "break patreons rules" and get away with it. You will also find some threads from dev's who have been banned. This shows there are two groups of people that have been or still are to be banned.

Group 1 didn't bother reading the terms of use or the guidelines and when caught didn't fix their content.
Group 2 did read or did know about the rules and chose to break them regardless, when caught they didn't fix their content either.

There are dev's who have had their account under review but made the needed changes and had their accounts reinstated, this shows that the banned dev's not only broke the rules but after being caught still refused to follow them resulting in a ban.

So no matter how you look at it, they have no one to blame but themselves.

As to why there are still some dev's breaking the rules and have not been banned, it's because patreon can not monitor all content all the time and relies on the community and reports to help. So a few slip through the cracks...

A few? There are literally hundreds of patreon creators that violate at least one of these in their games. Let's just call their rules what they are, 100 percent absolutely and completely arbitrary.

No live porn.
No bestiality (live and fictional).
No nonconsensual content (live and fictional).*
No incest content (live and fictional).*

And they are Pateon's rules. It's Patreon's house. If a person doesn't follow Patreon's rules and that person is caught, that person should experience the consequences.

You don't let people break the rules of your house without consequences, why should you hold others to a different standard for their house?

When the rules are enforced at extreme randomness, then they aren't really rules are they? That is the point, and don't think it's absurd people to bitch about it.

They aren't random.

They are enforced based upon reports, for the most part. If people don't report, it will take longer for Patreon staff to get a chance to investigate through spot checks on their own.

You're blaming the people trying to follow the rules and holding people to the rules. You should be blaming the people who break the rules, either unintentionally or quite intentionally. And that is the point.
