It's just how RenPy works. Most of the game is custom coded, so when you press "hide screens" - it hides everything, because it's all done on various screens.

Don't use older saves. If you do, start over with a new game. Check your journal for tips. Help is available in the main menu.
In the game itself, there are question marks on the left side. Click on them to learn more. Additionally, if you click on Chat, various texts will appear. Click on What Should I Do? at the top.

how do I unlock the second talent (pet)? i have cmc at max. I also can't find the spanking paddle

Have you got polyjuice potion and used it to give her the cat features? Don't forget the 'talents' are hierarchical - I always fall into the trap of getting the 'elegant' title so I can't get the others. ho-hum. I wish we could choose whichever one we wanted once they were unlocked...

The paddle appears in the defence against the dark arts classroom but I can't remember at what point it unlocks

Each class that you unlock, you need to keep her taking it until her education reaches at least 1. Then the next class should unlock. I forget the exact order, but you've got fashion, potions, library, COMC, and SPEW, and finally DADA (pretty sure it's the last). Also, watch which of the choices you take, for each class (the three options), since they do different things for your stats, except potions for some reason. Potions can get you actual potions though, if you ask her about the class, after she does it. If you get that to a higher level, she gets more types of potions too. Taking certain classes is one of the easiest ways to affect her stats, which opens up more options for the fashion class. Some potions also affect stats. If you get DADA to level 3, I think, you get the imperious spell, which also affects Hermione if you use it on her, and can be used on Filch to get a belly button ring.

Search for the paddle in DADA. Same with the chains. I think the paddle shows up after a while, and a cage you can search. Plus a bunch of potions you can sometimes find one of. You need to progress in the story, via her stats, or fashion education, (or potions level) in order to get that stuff to appear.

Also got no sex scenes, even when I got the option to have sex or to get a bj from Hermione. Is this the animation for this still in work or is this an error?
