of course it was shut down, because it was doing the exact things you can't do with trademarks you don't own. I'm not a lawyer, so I'm not going to give an extensive rundown on this, but you're comparing two vastly different things: the mention of a product in text vs. the use of trademarks without permission and using them in a manner that was specifically defamatory. The former is considered fair use under U.S. law. The latter absolutely is not. (Despite the prevailing myth that porn "parodies" are protected, they are generally considered not to be.)
As long as devs don't try to depict a trademarked image or defame a brand (such as suggesting that a real-world corporation has engaged in illegal activity), they're fine to say the name of a product in their game. No one is going to sue them. It's incredibly unlikely anyone will even bother to issue a C&D.
