Is there a way to play this update without starting over from the beginning?

If you already have a save file then you can carry over your save. Just go into the www folder of the copy the and paste the save folder from the old version into the new versions www folder.

how do you unlock the gallery image, i watched both variation of the scene, completed the side quest and rewatched the scene and i still have not unlocked the gallery photo.

You need to have the digital camera. Then watch the paizuri scene.
