That would depend on who the individual band members know, wouldn't it? If one of the guys in the band knows the guy, or if there was a last minute emergency, who knows? Who would you expect a guy in his late teens to early 20's ask? Someone in their 40's, or someone closer to their own age, someone they know?
I don't know why I'm getting involved, but to back up @TheDevian, Robbie Robertson wiggled himself into Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks when he was 16. Ronnie and the Hawks were all older and part of an established band.
