Is there a guide to downloading and reading the companion guide? This may be where people are going astray...
As a matter of fact, there is! I did some poking around and found the very thing you are referring to, sitting on a digital shelf, gathering digital dust. So, without further ado, here it is:

I haven't heard the "RTFM" statement since the old Unix days.
That's the beauty of the succinct guide I dusted off and shared; it combines a vintage reference (RTFM) with a relatively recent one (TL/DR), making it universal advice suitable for everyone.

(The modern "TL/DR" reference would seem to be a bit anachronistic for what is clearly a classic bit of HI troubleshooting meta-advice, but who am I to question the cosmic adult game powers that be . . . )

Strange - it looks like it hasn't been touched in a long time !?!?!?!?!

How to migrate to the new version of Holiday Island

As we won't have to wait long for the release of Holiday Island 3.1, here is my tried and tested recipe to migrate your current game to the most recent version - including your save files. This is for Windows 10 users!

So when the eagerly awaited moment arrives (early October, see Bantry's post), do the following:
  • Just to be on the safe side, locate the following folder on you system and copy all files therein to a safe location (do not delete them):
    • c:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Roaming\RenPy\Island-<some number>\
  • Download the new version from the front page (zip-file) when it becomes available.
  • Copy the folder at the top level of that zip-file to a location of your choice.
    • Do not copy the new content to the old game's folder.
    • Alternatively, create an appropriately named new folder in a location of your choice for the new version of the game, and copy the content of the zip-file to that location.
    • Download any available patches for the new version. Copy the content of the "game"-folder inside the zip to the HI "game"-folder.
  • That is it, you won't have to do anything else
    • Do not copy your old saves to the new game's "games\saves"-folder.
    • This approach should also prevent trouble with the "persistent" file.
    • Start the new game. All your previous save files should immediately be available when you click on "Load".
    • It seems HI automatically detects all the save files in the "AppData" folder. So if you don't touch them, they will be available for your new HI version.
    • If you create new saves, they are created in both the "AppData" folder and your HI folder under "games\saves".

If your new game crashes when you load an old save:
  • Have you used the Companion Mod in the past? You will have to reinstall it for the new version, otherwise the game will not load your old save files.
  • If your saves still don't load, delete the "persistent" file in both save game locations ("AppData" folder, "games\saves", see above).
After all that: have fun playing Holiday Island 3.1 :)
Great advice - I have every version separated into different file folders along with Mods, Guide updates. I have only had to go back once and reload after a bad install (on my part not the game's) The files don't take up much room and it is peace of mind just in case I get overly excited at what may come next ! Thank goodness for Weekend Fan Art in the meantime.

As the release is getting close, a small reminder.

I'll not be posting any Weekend Fan Art in the forum (my DA will update as normal, but no HI girls guaranteed) in the weeks right after a release, plenty of other things happening.

Normal approach, but then any newcomers know too.

Sorry, no Weekend Fan Art this weekend, I'm almost betting that DuckSwim is a Beta tester, so he's allowed. He has more important things to do!

Actually testing is not a factor.

It is mostly because I do not see the point (there will be hundreds of Darkhound renders) and the page spam after a release will make a lot of noise anyway.

That aside much of my time is spoken for, so the little time devoted towards the hobby side go to assets and a few new girls I wanted to try (Triss Merigold from the Witcher, Lara Croft and my own 2021 ultra-busty Luna rebuild).

But off topic, so cannot be put here.

Edit : Yep, there we go, release out.

Holiday Island 0.3.1.0 has been released!

Hello guys and gals,

testing for 0.3.1.0 has been finished and the new version is now available for everyone.
The update from 0.3.0.0 to 0.3.1.0 has 592 new renders, videos and sound files and 81 updated renders.
All of the new stuff is in ".webp" format and at least 2560x1440 resolution, which reduces space and increases image quality at the same time.

To see what's new, please check out the development news post for 0.3.1.0:

Save games from 0.0.8 alpha and later versions should still be working. Older saves are no longer supported.
!!!!! This is a new full version !!!!! Please download the full 0.3.1.0 from these links (they are also on the main page):

Windows/Linux version:

OR

Mac version:

OR

Android version: Since I can't relese bug fixes (or any partial updates) for Android, the first (and only) Android version for 0.3.1.x will be 0.3.1.1 If all goes as planned, it will be released in a couple of days. Thank you for your understanding.

Please extract the files into a new folder! Do not overwrite the existing game folder from an older version!

For all of you that get crashes as soon as you click on preferences or load, please manually add an empty text file in the HI sub folder "game". Name the file: "use_fixed_resolution_720.txt" What it will do is the following: It will remove the resolution options and also the auto window scaling. After you have applied the patch, you will also be able to manually scale the game window again (e.g. maximizing it).

Happy playing!

First of all, thanks you for the update! I already enjoyed Miriam's new content and walking on the beach!

However, I think I'm experiencing a bug. I started a new playthrough for this release and it released sooner than expected, so I hadn't done the lab sequence yet. When doing the lab sequence now in 0.3.1.0, I'm crashing on the final day when Mercedes is supposed to pick me up.

Let me know if you want me to give a save version which happens right before the crash. Traceback.txt in attachement.

View attachment traceback.txt

It could be I'm doing something strange, but I completed the lab sequence before on another laptop.

Attaching a traceback.txt is always helpful, otherwise we have no idea what may have caused the crash.
