So, here's a question: why the hell are 2 elf girls in the christmas dream named after guys? is it some sort of an inside joke? did someone play a prank on the devs with the names? seriously, the second i see their names, any thought of a good time is gone in a flash. or is that the intended purpose?
for those that don't get it: Irinel and Viorel are male names. have been since the times of the roman empire, as far as i know. they have female counterparts but these 2 are specifically used.

Also, some other mini-activity could do it as well. For example breakfast with rae and lyriel might increase lyriel's lewd.
Wikipedia tells me Irinel is unisex. In any case I do not think dev really know much Romanian, he just chooses these names to make the elves more fancy to the usual English-speaking. It is possible that dev makes some mistakes here.

Also, I'm not sure why the Roman Empire is being referenced; the elves are not from earth, so why would how names are used on earth matter? That's like saying a major character in Star Wars can't be named Luke because clearly they don't have the Bible on Tatooine. How silly.
i mentioned the roman empire because the names are that old in the romanian language. we had an optional course in high school about name etymology and to the best of my memory, most romanian names predate current era. also, Irinel is not unisex. whoever wrote that is a complete idiot. no offense. it can be used as a mocking nickname for tomboys, sure, but not as a name. the female version of the name is Irina. and for Viorel, it's Viorica. most names have male and female counterparts to them, in both romanian and all slavonic languages.
now, let me put why this bothers me so much in a way that's understandable: consider any female character, in any type of story(fantasy, sci-fi, w/e), like say Leia (since you brought up star wars), being called Arthur or Jonathan. does that make more sense? i doubt anyone outside of the former USSR states would get why i'm bothered, since that's where these names are mostly predominant. i literally thought it was some sort of an inside joke or a prank (either on or by the devs), hence why i asked.

I agree it would indeed be annoying, provided that you know it in the first place. For me, and I think I could speak for many players here, we do not see any issue here, because we do not even know they are male names, even though they might be ancient. Maybe dev could consider changing these names?

The thing is, you're still trying to equate fantasy with reality. The characters come from worlds far different to our own, different world, different origins of words.
Think of it like this: In English, "Home" means "an abode one lives in on a permanent basis", but in Finnish, it means "mold" and in Catalan, it means "Man".
You're applying our world's rules when they went out the window at the start of the game.

segaegae i'm not asking anyone to change a thing. they can leave it like that and all i'll do is just keep skipping the story when they show on screen. not really an issue. they can tell a story however they see fit. i'm simply stating my opinion. last i checked, that's still a constitutional right in most countries.

You have a good point here. Nevertheless it is still a game designed for normal English speaking players to READ, and all these fantasy world is linked to reality to a degree. Calling a girl by a male name could indeed ruin the atmosphere, and unless there is specific reason, it should be avoided.
In fact I believe there is some discussion about how important names are for characters some pages ago. You could say its all fantasy and thus name everything by anything, but will it make a good story for US to READ?
I would say probably it changes with time as well. What used to be a male name could now become unisex, given that it seems to be sometime since your high school?
Also, I think it is not too difficult to change the displayed name. It is just one line of code for dev:
define viorel = Character(_("Viorel"), who_color = "#adf")
(Though her names mentioned by others in dialogue should also be changed?)
In any cases, Irinel and Viorel are not that important, you won't have much chance to see them in the current game. In fact I still find it hard to know which elf is which.

I see where he is coming from however. I used to organize quite a few sports tournaments and started getting interested in the names of international participants. It made me stop playing football managers (soccer video games) later on because they had one nameset for African players and it just didn't feel right, all those Congolese with definitely West African names. Once you notice, you notice and it bothers you. Another example, since somebody named Finnish, is Captain Sisko of Deep Space 9 - while last names can be like that, "Captain Sister" sounds strange to anybody with Finnish knowledge.
That being said, there are real life examples of intercultural misunderstandings. Ask any Italian Andrea or Nicola about his (!) experience internationally.
And while any sufficiently alien group of people can have confusing names for our tongues, as somebody said, we have certain expectations. Of course this is an international forum and they differ. Most will not notice and still enjoy (this includes me), but as I said, once you've seen it, it will always be there no matter the rationalization.
*Sign it is probably something you just have to live with. So many names sound strange one you know what it actually means in the original language. We don't even need any fancy language, just Smith, Bush, Brown, Miller, White, Walker, Hall, King, Green, Baker, Hill, Cook, Cooper, Bell, Wood...
