I don't think you really miss anything by not playing the first. Most of what's going on is explained really well so aside from a few references you will catch up pretty quick.

I've played both but my wife has only played Automata and she said it was explained well enough without my constant commentary .... in less words it was more like "shut up, knob, i'm trying to play".

Nier Automata is actually really fucking fantastic, if you are into philosophy and existentialism this will give you a different kind of boner , i came for the 2booty, stayed for the story.

side note: i played the game on PC and i had a flawless time even in 4k. the only thing i would recommend when if you go PC route is to use a controller as keyboard controls are abhorrent at best

Relevant to this: After playing Nier, I have a hard time with 2b porn. To me, it's closer to that five nights at freddie's thing that's floating around. All the androids are sort of fundamentally alien in a way that makes porn just... pointless. Besides, that bit with 9s and all the clones in the tower was already effectively a sex scene. Well, for androids anyway.

Thoughts
Well...for a single character sex sim it's great. it has the quality expected of Studio FOW.
but there are much better experiences if you want a sex sim.
it does what it is suppose to do well but it's pointless to me.
