That game was actually surprisingly deep.
You are a superficially charming narcissistic sociopath with poor impulse control but great skills at being a social chameleon schmoozing your way to the top, milking your marks (the NPCs, but I'll call them "marks" as in you're doing "cons" on them) for all they're worth before moving on to the next... And there are so many details about what kind of people the marks are if you look at what they do, which other marks they talk to, which other marks they avoid and where in the level they hang out at... You just don't see it because you are the shallow sociopath who doesn't care until you can find a way to exploit it... But sociopaths have actually poor impulse control, so you have to act out in ways where you can hide it to still look "normal".
That game shows you the world from the warped perspective of a narcissistic sociopathic manipulator, and it's so good at presenting that warped perspective through very simplistic looking gameplay features and few lines of writing that you don't even realize you are the shallow part of the world, just like sociopaths don't think that they are the ones with issues...
Hats off to the writers and programmers to have pulled that incredible feat of writing off for a silly "porn version of the sims" game...
