For me it really depends on how its done.I'm not a huge fan of subverting expectation. It works sometimes. Most of the time, I feel cheated. I signed up to experience X. The authors just wasted my time investment by providing Y after advertising X. Let me note those names so I don't give them another chance to waste my resources again
In Rewrite the change is very natural, while remaining a clear cut point. All elements were hinted before, hidden in plain sight or even carefully exposed. Then, the shift happens and the story feels smooth about it.
I dont believe House in the Rift will go to those details, but sometimes for stories not to stalemate, you need to flip the board.
