For the people that get the error something along the line:

The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005).

This is because the newer Unity version doesn't support older windows versions anymore. You need to have windows 10 or newer.

This rather annoying to be honest. I updated Unity to a newer version to get around other problems, which did got fixed, to keep up--to-date and have a supported Unity version... but now this version is introducing "new" problems... great...
If I would switch back to the older version, whose support ends in 2025 anyway, I probably couldn't get Android to work on all devices anymore and introduce other problems.

Ah fuck, need to think about how to deal with that.
For what it's worth, Steam stopped support for anything before Windows 10 in 2024, Google Chrome did so too, Firefox only has ESR support until march 2025. It's time for people to get with the times and use up-to-date operating systems. Doesn't have to be Windows, Linux is also a possibility, especially on older hardware.

Windows 7 is now over 15 years old, people can't expect such old software to be supported forever.

I'm left kinda cold by this latest update. I've really liked this game thus far, but the end of the villains felt rather rushed and I'm left further scratching my head about Selene and whether or not I'm supposed to care about her in the long term.

Her constant "betrayals", for lack of a better word, and misgivings towards the MC make it hard for me to see why I should care about her at all, which feels like wasted time then given everything that has happened in Part 1, and then suddenly thrusting all the family members at us, plus the others, just all feels very, odd.

I'm tentatively looking forward for future content, but I really rather hope that the next update will set us on some kind of stable ground and at least hint at what the future holds, rather than just being left at the end of this update feeling like I'm grasping at straws...

With even Windows 8 out of support by Microsoft for near 2 years now, personally I don't think it's fair for end users to expect new stuff to continue to run perfectly on it. IMO the onus here is for the end users to upgrade to a modern platform. Otherwise, where do we draw the line on support? If I were still running such an out of date platform, my expectation would be "if it works, then great; but if it doesn't, then it sucks to be me, it's not the developer's problem."

But then again I'm not a developer (or at least hasn't been one for decades) so my perspective might be a little (or very far) off.
if you aren't at least on win 10 these days you better not be on the internet, that's my view on the topic

There are quite a lot of people still on windows 7 with older machines that don't support newer windows version. While I agree this is a security risk but some people don't have the possibility to upgrade. Some may are even happy to have a machine at least.
And let's be honest, the game itself is 'just' a bit better Powerpoint. For the game loop itself there is no need for a modern machine or game engine. I don't like the fact Unity dropped the downwards compatibility. That used to be something they were proud of...

Depending on whether you want to play the taboo version or not you need to set the language AND the character config (both in the options in different tabs). At the moment they are still separated. I try to implement a more convenient way to set it up.

All very true, but it still doesn't negate my point - the onus is on the end user, not the developer. While I understand that as a developer you'd like to have the game as backward compatible as possible, it really shouldn't be a priority of any kind, especially for already E-O-L by years platforms.

What I'm trying to say is, if you can make it work easily, great, by all means go for it. Otherwise don't lose much if any sleep over it.

I fully agree with Cabin Fever 's point, end users can't forever expect to run new software on old operating systems, it becomes simply unreasonable after a certain amount of time and 15 years seems plenty to me. And they don't necessarily have to get new hardware, Linux is almost always an option. For example, I have put Xubuntu on an older Notebook from the early 2010s because newer Windows support isn't that great on it, but the hardware is still perfectly capable of running tasks such as light office work, browsing and running Visual Novels.

Maybe they rewrote some internal part of the rendering pipeline to use features of newer APIs that are simply not present on older operating systems. Maybe it's not even their "fault" and upstream libraries they depend on dropped support for anything before Windows 10. For what it is worth, Renpy will also drop support for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 in their next major release.
