I think this has a lot of merit given that the detective shows up at the coffee shop with some comments about how things were going and to stay out of old towne. I really think the detective is keeping tabs on the MC and that she was probably planning something to catch all of these people in the act. Maybe even her and the MC were in cahoots and he had a recorder during the conversation and she was waiting to bust in at the right moment. She certainly knew about the fights and was certainly collecting information. It makes sense.
I think your recollection isn't that far off. I also recall that the MC would be able to romance them all, up to a point, but that it wouldn't necessarily be a "getta catch 'em all" scenario all the way through the end of the game. Basically, when epilogue time comes around, the MC will end up having to choose being with one, or maybe at most two or three, of the LIs.
