Not being a gay man myself I can only examine it from a purely psychological perspective which obviously misses the big part of the puzzle provided by lived experience, so I appreciate your perspective on it. I figured the disassociation and comfort aspect was central to it, but didn't consider how it may also stem from deep-seated trauma and potential self-hatred. Although this is all just speculation, I do think there's something there. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!As a gay who has wondered about that as well, what I speculate is:
Again, this is all speculation as I don't think anyone has any studies published on this matter lol x) but my general feeling is that we as gays are so traumatized and discriminated against when we're young that we might feel pulled towards or even relegated towards this niche.
- Homosexuality is a "bad thing" in just about all families so most gays are traumatized one way or another while growing up and figuring out our own sexuality etc;
- So this leads us to develop grave issues related to intimacy and romance cuz all gays do is fuck and get fucked without ever working on their inner trauma which often makes us hate ourselves;
- Finally, due to our internal struggles we find it easy to dissociate from ourselves ("humans") and might see furries as an easy outlet to project our wants and desires without having to deal with the trauma. In that way, furries could be seen as an alternative for traumatized gays to unleash their bottled up feelings while maintaining a façade of control. For example, some guys might enjoy a big male wolf fucking a smaller male wolf but they don't enjoy watching two men fuck each other because (insert personal trauma related to sexuality).
You overthink this. For example for me, I found the "furry fandom" by accident. I am very into size difference, and at the time the majority of quality porn art featuring size difference (or at least the ones I managed to find at the time) were furry art. And I just ignored the furry aspect mostly, it did not really mattered to me. In most cases furry art can pass as human art minus the head of the characters and the potential extra tail/wing/whatever.Not being a gay man myself I can only examine it from a purely psychological perspective which obviously misses the big part of the puzzle provided by lived experience, so I appreciate your perspective on it. I wasn't talking about why people would play such a game, of which there are many reasons, I was questioning the predominance of furry-centric vs human-centric games (why so many are created) in the gay genre verses hetero & lesbian genres.I've never read so much bullshit in my life before, wow.
Guys the reason is:
1. It's gay porn.
2. Big dicks.
3. High quality art compared to that 3D nightmare with horrible shit models.
While I agree it's hard to be precise due to thing like mis-tagging (as you mentioned), I decided to try a little comparison by including and excluding certain tags to get some idea of percentages of furry vs not furry for gay, hetero & lesbian. I tried to be as 'purist' as I could, but may have messed up some tags.As for the claim (made by someone) that 95% of gay games contain furries: gay tag -> 31 pages, gay+furry -> 10 pages, so that would be less than a third. (And I think the furry tag is used on games which does not really have furry content, not to mention that the gay tag is also used on games which does not really have gay content, so I would guess the real percentage would be closer to 25% but it is hard to tell due to mis-tagging)
My guess would be that gay members of the furry fandom are quite happily throw their money away... sorry I mean at artists for commissions and/or patreon or other similar sites. After the first few "successful" gay furry games emerged, for example like Blackgate (which will be never finished, yet some poor (not financially) souls still throwing their money at it) many indie (porn) game developers saw this as a golden opportunity and all of them jumped on the band wagon, and they are killing it as well. There are many essentially dead or just objectively horrible projects which are still generate money for them for very little effort. As for why gay furries seems to value their money less, and why they are more willing to pay for junk, that is a mystery indeed.I wasn't talking about why people would play such a game, of which there are many reasons, I was questioning the predominance of furry-centric vs human-centric games (why so many are created) in the gay genre verses hetero & lesbian genres.
You are over-analysing it. There might be social / psychological implication in the background,I wasn't talking about why people would play such a game, of which there are many reasons, I was questioning the predominance of furry-centric vs human-centric games (why so many are created) in the gay genre verses hetero & lesbian genres.
If it were just about 'nice art of gay guys with big dicks' then there would be no reason to create so many furry-centric gay games when human-centric gay games would work just as well for it, but there is, so they provide something besides that that human characters don't.
And there wouldn't be a greater predominance of furry-centric games in the gay genre than in any other genre, but there is. So gay game creators (and those commissioning them, I guess) prefer furry porn more than hetero and lesbians creators seem to.
Because I've an interest in psychology, and some people were commenting on how many furry gay games there were, I figured I'd ask about it because it's something I've noticed and been curious about.

With the hetero I deliberately turned off gay but left lesbian as I found a lot of the straight games I've seen have lesbian content in there, and occasionally gay bait. If I would have turned lesbian off the percentage would have likely been smaller.
With the gay and lesbian, I tried to eliminate any tag that might include other unwanted games (where the tags are just thrown in, willy nilly. According to that, around 40% of gay games are furry, whilst hetero and lesbian have 3% and 4% furry games. That's a pretty big discrepancy.
Also, one look at the games on the front page just by using the gay tag shows 19 of the 30 games are furry.

Anyway. I think that's enough 'research' for today, lol.
I do digital art as a hobby (the 3d kind) and I think you've got all the right ideas here. I don't only do furry stuff but there's a couple good incentives to do it. Lots of good reference material from talented 2d furry artists. Furry art has a notable presence in the online community so it gets seen. Erotica is less mainstream so you aren't competing with industry professionals. Its inherently stylized so there's less of a expectation of extremely high-poly renders and complicated shaders. Human heads are hard to sculpt so sometimes when all you wanna to do is sculpt a smoking hot body its just easier to give em a cute cartoony wolf head and a tail and call it a day lolYou are over-analysing it. There might be social / psychological implication in the background,
but the reasons are far less complicated - no grander landscape, mostly about the Porn itself - Horniness.
- Men are more horny, like to think with their dicks, hence more likely to actively seeking out sex;
- Gay men are more sexually open-minded cuz they are out of the box (traditional hetero) in the first place.
- This leads to willing to explore more possibilities >>> Furry / Fantasy / Xeno sex good
- Why limit yourself to less (human) , while you can have more (non-human and fantasy)
- Yes most furries only sexually attracted to certain aspect of other species rather than the species themselves, hence "furry" is totally different from "bestiality"
- "Furry" requires "Creativity" to exist, the same characteristic for Game dev / Art / Media
- You see higher percentage of creative works within furry community >>> More products being made
- Many porn game devs creating games to realise their sexual fantasy.
- And furry sex can only exist in media, hence they are more inclined to "create"
- There's also the aspect of "Reference", creativity is quite difficult, if there's something being created and it's Hot / Sexy, many creators will take the reference >>> some species appears more often
It's not that hetero / lesbian can't create non-human porn games, but they are more content to be inside the box.
There are much higher percentage of closed minds there to things not the "norm".
(You see way more Hetero scream at the sight of Homo, but rarely the opposite)
You're also not nearly as likely to fall into the uncanny valley.I do digital art as a hobby (the 3d kind) and I think you've got all the right ideas here.
