His Patreon options for the game are 4.50, 10, and 21.50. The fact that he listed these values as subscription fees blows my mind, because they are insanely high for a subscription fee - it doesn't matter that people can choose to do it or not. Nobody should be paying 21.50 as a subscription more than three times for a PC game. No PC game is worth more than $75 maybe a few exceptions will hit $100 or like SIMS 4 with it's 1 million DLCs.
What should have been policy on Patreon is you select the genre of your Patreon. If you select game, you now have a subscription fee limit, maximum $5. This means you can subscribe to a game for 1 year + 3 months at $5 and hit 75$. Or you can subscribe to the game for 6 years at $1.
Patreon could have included custom subscription option. Where the user inputs how much they want to donate monthly, for those billionaires who want to donate 21.50 a month for 6 years.
The way Patreon is doing it, is wrong, morally wrong. And the fact that Palmer doubled down on it with insane subscription fees, is wrong, morally wrong. I understand people can choose to opt out, but if that's the case they can choose donate 10,000$ too, so why shouldn't a donate button cover all of this choosing?
Why a subscription fee? You know why? Because people forget they subscribed to shit, and just end up sending 21.50 a month for a few months before they realize to shut it off, or sometimes they realize right away but they already sent the 21.50 for the next month despite not wanting too. If 100 people failed to cancel their subscription in time, that's 100 x 21.50.
This would only be helped if Patreon had something like an account draw limit. So I can set my limit to 75$, and then let the subscription run until it drains 75$, and it automatically shuts off after. Does patreon have this feature? If not then it's a scam site, Patreon wants to make as much money off subscriptions as possible, and people who use it love that.
EDIT: a glance at other patreon like AWAM and ORS, their first tiers are in 2-3 dollar range. their second tier is in 5-8 dollar range. And their last tier is in 15-18 dollar range. Palmer doubles his charge for first tier. Asks for $2 more on second, and up to $5+ more on last. lol But then he says "if you don't like update times i encourage you to subscribe once a month on release month"... yeah easy to pretend you care when you know 90% of people won't do that based on the pay model and stats. If there was a donate button he would probably make zero money. People donate once and then forget about you.
P.S And I doubt AWAM and ORS are prime examples of not being greedy lol but even they have lower subscription rates.
EDIT 2: Steps of debauchery, 2, 8.50 and 14.50. All games seems to have this range on patreon except our beloved Palmer. Steps of Debauchery is also a steam game. Sells for 19.49 on steam. So less than a 1 month subscription to Palmer.
And if we take a game like A life worth living, 2, 4.50, 7.50. His second tier is Palmers first tier. And all these games feel $2 is enough for a first tier. Palmer doesn't.
