Chris isn't obsessed with Anna. He can't accept that a wimp like David has landed a more attractive woman than perhaps he ever has.

He is obsessed with humiliating David; after pumping Anna full of his sauce, he will leave her on Anna and David's marriage bed without looking back.

You are probably right. Chris really is a POS. But, he is a necessary evil in Anna's corruption (whether he nails her or not).
