The problem with these games are they lack critical details one would find in novels, so to point players have to make leaps of logic to fill in the gaps. The best games are those that don't require too big of leaps.

APM doesn't require a Wild E. Coyote rocket pack to make those jumps. We know firsthand Anna lived under an all controlling tyrant of a father... we know it was never enough for her father Anna's successes. So, we have 'leap' that Anna's life was one of unfulfillment. We know that David wasn't as controlling as Anna's tyrannical father but somewhat controlling.

In the game, the player often gets to mold Anna's past (lunch chats with Kendra and all those choices players make)-- and those choices move Anna into certain behaviors or vulnerabilities. But many miss the lesser clues who Anna really is. A huge miss is the story Anna tells in monologue about getting groped at David's office party and the night Sophia was conceived. She was so turned on by the incident it turned out to be a wild night of passion--that is a huge hint what Anna was about.

And we forget about just how underwhelming having sex with David was in the very beginning--Anna wasn't really satisfied.

Spin to the present and you have a character Anna frustrated with her whole life (a moment of freedom while in college, lost freedom in graduate school, a desire to move on in her life) and another Coyote rocket pack latter we can leap to the fact Anna knows she is 27 and her better "fun" years are behind her and nature isn't her ally and wants to enjoy the remaining time of her youth and beauty
