Not saying it isn't possible, it probably is, but I usually don't get the threesome until well into the "Trip to Kirlic" quest. Mostly because it takes so long to wait for Grant and Ophilia to come and go, so I concentrate on advancing that part.
Yeah, I don't know how I did it either, it was the first time I had done it. I'm guessing I did the quests of certain characters in a order and found a sweet spot where it triggered early.
If you mean when you gotten higher in level and kill without entering the battle screen, then it's normal. It's a option you can turn on and off called quick battle.

RESOLVED - I used save editor to change the advanced variable "Tia Maui Training" from 1 to 0. Hope this helps someone else
I almost broke my mouse trying different clicks within the scene with no success.... but I never tried the keyboard as you suggested. Tried the scene again, tapped the spacebar and BAM - the scene stared. I can't believe I didn't try that - Duh!
