At The Gates
Good afternoon,
It’s Friday again, which means it’s time to talk about the past week and what I’ve managed to get done.
As I mentioned last Friday, most of my time this week went into working on the maps for Kirlic. Right now, I’m focusing on three main areas: the city entrance, the central district, and the inn. The entrance is more or less complete aside from a few small details, and the central area is mostly done as well, though it still needs some visual polish, especially around the streets, so I can’t really show it just yet. My goal is to give the impression of a larger city this time, meaning more buildings overall, but unlike Arenfield, not all of them will be relevant or accessible in the story.
Work on the inn is still in the concept phase. I’ve already set up some of the room structures and a rough layout, but the detailed design work hasn’t been done yet.
That brings me to my goals for next week: characters. Once the map work is wrapped up, I plan to start creating new characters: new guards as well as ordinary townsfolk, to make the city feel more alive. Then, of course, there are also the characters who will play important roles in future updates. Especially for the female ones, I’ll need to design and create fitting new models.
Aside from that, I’ve also been thinking about how I want to continue building the main story. After reading Marcus’s letter, I realized there’s currently no follow-up quest where the MC considers traveling to Kirlic to meet the contact mentioned in the letter, Renold. I’ll be adding that in right after the conversation with Mira, where she decides to become a priestess.
For existing save files, this quest will automatically trigger when entering Arenfield. It might feel a little odd for the MC to suddenly have that thought now, but I think that’s still better than having players wonder where to find the quest. It will also be possible to travel to Kirlic on foot (for those who don’t yet own a horse), and I plan to include the chance of being ambushed on the road, something I originally wanted to do for Kate’s update but had to cut due to time constraints.
I’m still figuring out how exactly I want to handle the quest that allows entry to the city. One idea is to separate Bjorn’s quest from Kate’s storyline so that it can start independently. Alternatively, I could come up with a different way of gaining access to Kirlic. I haven’t made a final decision yet, but I’ll keep thinking it through. In any case, the player will ultimately need to be recognized as a legitimate visitor to the city, which means a follow-up quest will be required. If you have any cool ideas about what this quest could look like, you can send them directly to me and I will take them into consideration.
For today I'll continue a little longer with the city map and hopefully finish it.
That is all for now, and I wish you all a nice weekend!
