A Midweek Report
Good morning,
This is the kind of post I really didn’t want to write. Not on Saturday, and even less so today. But I don’t want to keep you all in the dark any longer, so it’s time to talk about what happened.
As I mentioned on Discord last week, I took Friday off because of a holiday. Instead, I worked all day Saturday. Of course, that still wasn’t enough, and parts of the update were still unfinished. So I did the same again on Monday and by around 11 PM, at least the Dasan route was done. Yesterday, I kept going until about 10 PM, and finally, everything was finished. For a brief moment, I felt pure relief. All that was left to do was testing and fixing a few bugs.
I had just started the first test run and was working on a small fix when it happened, RPG Maker crashed. When I reopened the project, I just sat there in disbelief: the entire Rumah map was gone. Deleted. Completely.
Now, before you outrage, there’s a bit of good news. I’ve been making regular backups ever since something similar happened during the Athia update (some of you might remember that). The problem is… those backups were done manually, using a .bat file that copies all the maps to another drive. And the last time I ran it was on October 6th, 6:29 PM.
Yeah… I forgot to make one yesterday.
I couldn’t sleep at all last night and I’m still angry at myself for being that careless. The first thing I’m going to do after finishing this post is set up automatic backups, I should have done that back then, but when it didn't work out via a windows task I thought doing backups manually would be enough... I guess something like this had to happen so that I see that it wasnt. I never want to go through this again.
And yes, I know how this sounds… like the kid telling the teacher that the dog ate his homework. But it’s the truth, and it hit me really hard last night. I was finally starting to feel that weight of “needing to deliver” lift off my shoulders, and then this happened.
Still, there’s no way around it. I’ll have to rewrite and recode everything from the point of that backup. Thankfully, all the images and the parts I worked on outside of the map are still intact. But I know I won’t get it all redone today. I’m exhausted, especially after a sleepless night, and after several days of non-stop crunch, I just can’t keep working until midnight again.
The only silver lining is that I still remember exactly how everything was supposed to go, so it’s just a matter of recreating it. So yeah, time to grit my teeth and get back to it.
I really hope I can release the finished update soon.
Thank you also for all the kind words on discord, with which you tried to cheer me up.
It's rough, but I did it once, so I can do it again.
I hope you had a better start into wednesday than me.
I'll write my next report on Friday.
