there is no one to shareThat's it lads, the milky way dries up, it's a good sign actually. The game won't get finished but he can't live on 12k monthly anymore based on this... "slowburn" precalcualtion.

There's nothing regarded as security as long as the one with data is willing to share every file component wether it's a key or password.. Maybe he's randomly changing it everytime idk..
Can someone explain how can a developer protects an update from being leaked here?
By URL? He cannot. There is always a need to REupload downloaded file, do not use original url simply because it can be put down by dev himself and swapped for patreons to new one (cat-mouse game).
If someone really downloaded it, i assume it is processed automatically, in other way it would not be any user-friendly method
Then he can always pack up his whole game folder and share it as a package There are also some known methods based on linking account with patreon/subscribestar subscriptions, but it is easily bypassable, especially in RenPy games which are open-coded

How would that make it more challenging? Just unpack it and re-upload it without a password?
