Yes, Part 2 is a new download to reduce the current file size of Part 1. Part 1 is 6+ GB. However, there will be a feature to move your save files over so you can keep the points you have accumulated from Part 1.

Well... games get to a certain size and they new game. It slows game down, and the the download if things get too big.
There are of course solutions for this so you can use old saves, or start new on part 2 and probably ask a few questions to get on the save route you were looking for.

Your saves are stored in a different location and not just in the in game save folder.

Why can't L&P create a script that would allow you to simply add a folder with updated content to the game? This is a problem for an 8th grade student.

Just like suggesting a Render Farming service to him, This idea probably won't work for him, although you can ask yourself. You may have better luck convincing him than other people.
It's a BlueBall cheesecake.Maybe an extra scene or event.

Such a script is easier to write than to understand how it works.
