You get to see his efforts of trying to win his mother's sexual attention. It would make Sophia's eventual change in attitude towards him more legitimate versus her just suddenly falling for her son. His arc is Certainly more believable versus the irrational attraction that Sophia has towards Sam, who's biggest move towards Sophia's affection is smiling, looking good and being mannerable.
