GIFs eat space like nothing else
... With the compressed version my goal was adding support for webm/mp4 to save space, but not drop the quality too far... 
I might be able to make it slightly smaller if I was a bit more aggressive with compression,but some of the issue is that by going from GIF to WEBM instead of Source to WEBM is that the GIF artifacts are decreasing compression efficiency.
In 2.2 I would estimate there are roughly 2,600 GIF/WEBM Animations and 3,800 Images.
In 2.3 there are 680 more images, most of them seem to be animated (I only really downloaded it haven't broken it down yet).
