You don't need to, PC has saves in the game, and also in APP data, I believe mac has secondary save as well.

FYI, Mac has no secondary save, but that's not needed. MacOs has a very robust backup system build in, so if a Mac user loses his save, or any other file for that matter, in most cases that's entirely his own fault IMO.

~/Library/RenPy is the primary, and only, save location. Please show me the back-up location you were talking about.

No. I do have a ~/Library/RenPy/backups - But there's only 1 game subfolder in it so I assume I made it myself.

That folder does not exist, unless the user made it himself manually like e6mill. Even then, Ren'Py doesn't know about it and won't use it for backup.
Looks like I'm not the one who is wrong after all it seems
