I believe when you install Steam it becomes the default player for games unless you tell it/choose not too

Probably only certain games though. Ones that were in ISO format or games that actually mount to a drive. I'm not 100% sure I don't use steam. Had it ..didn't like all the permissions and defaults it set on it's own. In short I found it intrusive lol

Can you right click on the file and see any options that say ...open with....

i'm afraid it's an .exe file so there is no option to open with any other programs

You need to go into Control panel...then programs...then default programs and check or uncheck Steams defaults I'm sticking with Win 7 until they pry it from my cold dead hands or well they stop updating it like XP. So I'm not used to 10. I've used ..hated it and kicked it just like 8 and 8.1.

Unless I'm wrong, this happens with games that use the steam api. Usually there's an app to bypass steam with games from steam or someone removing the code from the game that calls the api.

Makes sense why it's only some games.

Another Windows 10 here, and it doesn't work. I'm assuming that @brynhildr didn't either forgot to remove the Steam stuff, or didn't realise it was in there in the first place. It's not an issue with the default apps, but rather the .exe and all the things that go with it.

Open task manager and shut steam down ...end process. Or better yet delete the hog all together Hahahaha

Windows 7 user here, and didn't have any problem at all. Double-clicked the .exe without deleting/doing absolutely nothing and works fine (though as of now, I've bought the game in the end. It's only 0,79€ so not that big of a loss and the music are pretty nice, as well as the gameplay itself).
