So, despite the exact same thing happening, it's where it's happening in the chain that bothers you? Really?

dj -> making music -> finds more music -> makes new music.

person -> ai -> making picture -> finds more pictures -> makes new picture.
The exact same thing isn't happening though. The artist is choosing what to repurpose vs the AI choosing what to repurpose.

Edit: But you are right that the distinction is where in the chain it's happening.

Spoken like someone who's never done any image generation other than chatgpt fiddling.

I've expressed before that AI is progressing way too fast. There's nothing really wrong with that, but my anxiety won't let me relax. That is beside the point. AI is more of a tool. However, so is the fill tool in MS paint. The feeling I get from art is usually from what the artist is feeling when making the art. AI tends to feel soulless because a bunch of people who use AI(not everyone just a large majority) couldn't give two shits about quality. I feel like the problem with (most) AI "artists" is they aren't being creative. They're taking a shortcut.

I've used AI image gen for a novel I'm working on. Just to give me some inspiration for settings and characters.
To clarify, this is what I use to pull images in to another image I'm building to guide style, pose, mood, position, etc. It uses controlNet and preprocessing to do so. The biggest gripe I have when people complain about AI imaging is when they have no idea how it works.

Nah, just throwing it back.

Honestly though. If it's your thing and you have a passion for it. Have at it.
It was a direct response to your claim that "The artist is choosing what to repurpose vs the AI choosing what to repurpose." Which is obviously not the case as imaging progresses. Take this as a "now you know" moment.

Edit: Meaning, the guidance that the person gives the AI is getting more and more granular as compared to how most people think of it where you type a prompt "give me a woman with huge tatas" and you take what you get.

But you haven't told me anything different. Just because it's more granular and hence your making some more choices doesn't mean the AI isn't choosing what to repurpose.

Is there a difference in effort between tatas guy and someone who refines the image? Sure there is. Does the effort make it art though?

I created an image like that in the studio using a ladder to shoot from and blue light reflecting off tinfoil to give the appearance of water. I even used toy fish to lay next to my model so it gave the appearance she was surrounded by a school of fish. I had a lot of fun with that shoot.

Masking and filling in with prompts is more effort than just tatas guy but you are still asking the AI to repurpose for you. I applaud the effort, but it hasn't changed my mind.
Not that you need to.
