Make sure in the fonts folders are ms gothic and ms mincho fonts.
I don't know how steamdeck works, but is there a way to open the game through a terminal so you can see the system informing you about the problem? On pc opening the terminal from the games folder and typing LANG="ja_JP.UTF-8" wine AGE.EXE will start the game.

still couldnt make this work. I had to try this using flatpak because i cant install wine due to partition getting full but even while using flatpak i get error c0000135. chat gpt told me to install microsoft visual c++ and even then its still not working. linux is so cooked

is there a way to upscale the game or make it look a tiny bit better when in full screen or borderless window mode?

like it almost looks fine in the screen shot but it looks MUCH MUCH worse when i see it ingame if i leave it windowed its fine and the text doesnt feel slapped together but yeah
also its not as noticable but ITS EXTREMELY jagged like every edge its so low resolution that the nvidia overlay text is actually unreadable so yeah if anyone has some tools or something to help with that would be great

I'm pretty sure this is just a resolution problem. And these games are built on ancient Japanese hardware like Windows 7.

Okay some of that is a joke, but there were some businesses still using Windows XP when either 7 or 8 was out. Bottom line is, a lot of these games are built on aging hardware and Japan is too stubborn to move on, so there's usually no way to really upscale it.

I exited the game and all save files are gone is there a save file location

This is only a Information if somebody play it new and have this problem.

When you use the exe with Japanese Emulator save and quiet the game after a time.

Next time you don`t think about the Japanese Emulator and start the game so your saves are gone.

Start the game with Japanese Emulator and you can see your save files.
