I think the character screen is just put in the game too early. When you level up, you can use it normally.
Character screen also gives me errors out the ass. Never played the game before, fresh install, no cheat mods or anything of the sort.
To fix the character screen error I went into app--roaming--renpy deleted the game folder there did a fresh install(not sure if the fresh install is required didnt test it) and the character window work for me now. Mine bugged out after using URM cheat.

Welp glad it fixed it for you but not for all obv. I tried a fresh install to no avail. On both joiplay and Android and it doesn't work. So ♂

Also to answer to the now deleted question from Boehser Onkel yes, it was a fresh install, no urm, no nothing, first time playing this game.

Android I guess?
Touch the screen and keep your finger on the screen, then move it around. It will act like hovering the screen with a mouse and show clickable areas.
Depending on the size of your finger it will be more or less practical
There is also 2 skills you can buy pretty early that can help (Inspection - green- for physical actions and Creative II - purple - for immaterial actions)
Started over on PC yesterday, there was no errors and I found no new content like the last couple of updates.
The game ended in the same place as many updates ago but I guess the skill three UI is new.

This last update was only about adding russian and the before added a kind of test in the beginning of the game.
So no, there is not progress in the story yet.

Why is even a priority to add others language than english (im not native speaker btw) if real updates takes almost a year? Whats the point of translating if you dont even have the product half way. I guess is just to have some filler content? Otherwise I just dont understand
