Let's be more precise. The dev could have achieved the same with half the LOVE INTERESTS. Cutting the number of characters in half would absolutely make the in-game universe feels small and be a bad idea.
Apples and oranges, you talking about 2 completely different concepts of AVN, the other game you mention is a "family" game where the focus are on 2-3 chars (besides the MC) and a few more side characters that also don't add that much imho. But this is a sci-fi game, they usually are better if you don't limit too much and build an enough large in-game universe like Cabin Fever pointed out. Those kind of games along with fantasy and mystery/thriller work better with a bit more happening around it, so isn't bad more characters or plot events but not too much also, that is the balance the dev have to figure it out what is enough. At the moment seems still fine since this game seems at most at 1/4 or 1/3 of the total content in the end.
I'm gonna get some flack for this, but despite the obvious quality of this game, the dev made the same mistake that many devs make. Namely too many characters.
Let me reiterate this is one opinion, if you disagree , more power to you, you are entitled to it.
I call it background pussy syndrome, Characters that receive little to no character development, and exist solely for the mc to fuck. The bloat the game, and more importantly eat up dev time.
Frankly what would have been lost if the entire sorority stuff was cut? And I like them, especially the albino lawyer and the twins.
What would have been lost if the psychiatrist was replaced with a wizened old guy that acts like a mentor for the mc?
I wish more devs followed the K.I.S.S. principle( keep it simple stupid). Yeah some players like variety, but what is the point if they get no character development, and their story gets updated every once in a blue moon.
Truthfully the entire sorority thing could have been an entire separate game.
I personally disagree, I'd say this game is still down to an alright number of girls, yea sure you got a couple of girls from the sorority you just have a quickie with, but otherwise the rest are fairly well developed, look largely its clear the main LI focus is on Kindra & June, with some secondary focus on most of the sorority girls & V, their story development isn't really bogging down the story, most of it still focus on Kindra, June & Artemis, the rest mostly just give some flavor to the world so the story doesn't feel like its tunnel visioning too much.
Look I get where you come from I seen some games where the main story is delayed to once every several updates because the side stuff is encroaching drastically on the development to the point it can take years RL between main story updates, but with this game its a single big update a year and about 66 to 75% of it is main story & core characters development effectively speaking, so its still at a good amount of it.
After the end of the most recent update I think Kindra is gonna acquiesce and hire Reina's company. Thats my theory anyway, she was apprehensive about getting help before but after this I think she has to.

I want to right this little note and im not sure if Digi.B will read it but I plan to support digi in the future. This VN hit close to home for me as someone who struggled a long time after having a breakup with their highschool sweetheart of 5 years I found myself relating at lot to the MC.
I broke into tears many times with this VN and love the story he has created. Looking forward to seeing this great story being crafted and can't wait as it unfolds.
You can tell its custom, same for most chars in this game because if you haven't seen them a dozen time already in different games they are typically custom. At the rate games you can find on this site are being made anything that wasn't custom has been overused, so yea its easy to figure which games employ custom character rather than merely slightly altered generic.
