Funnily enough I didn't come here since the last update dropped and I remember people doing the exact same thing then. And what exactly did that accomplish? Oh, right. The mods wiped pages of comments.

Like I get complaining and criticizing but at this point this would be annoying as all hell for anyone who bookmarked this page.

Instead of wasting your time complaining again and again, how about you do something similar to the following idea.
Make a list of all your grievances and whenever someone wants to know what's going on or tries to defend the DEV for whatever reason, quote that list.

Here's my TL;DR of the talking points from last couple of pages as a reference:
1.There's a delay
2.Dev lazy
3.Dev bad
4.Dev greedy
5.Dev is scamming
6.People arguing

You'll have to replace my TL;DR points with the actual grievances you have and this will save a lot of time for everyone who already said their piece.

If the DEV turns out to be a jackass the people will remember but that doesn't mean you need to be the same.

There are no conventions that say you shouldn't jump from v0.5 to v1.0. It's perfectly fine to label the big release as v1.0 even if the time process building up to it doesn't go linearly from 0.1, 0.2, ... 0.8, 0.9, 1.0.

If you think your game as 0.5 and then rename it to 1.0 WITHOUT ANY ADDITIONS, sorry, it is inadequate and I will not trust you enough to give you money.
If your 0.5 was the whole game - why the 0.5 then and not 0.9? To give false hope and milk more money? Or there was more content planned, but canceled coz of bad management? Those numbers aren't for you exactly - they are for the audience. We can have 10-20 interbuilds with names like v.0.38b13, but outer naming will follow simple pattern for users/clients to "view the progress". Smart manager can play with those 0.7-0.8-0.9 to increase audience involvement for nice bonus.
If versions jump from 0.35 to 1.0 release the first question will be " what was cut from the project ?" There is no conventions, yes, but ignoring things like that is quite stupid.

It seems like you may be accidentally conflating version numbers with some sort of percentage progress meter that devs can offer fans if they've got a confident estimate on the progress of a certain patch, or the overall game.

A dev can choose to give an idea of percentage progress, but that is not the same as a version number.

Again - I don't say you SHOULD choose one naming system over another. I'm saying, people subconsciously perceive these numbers as progress. Could you use it for your advantage? Yes. Should you? No. Many things are like that - optional.
You can communicate with you audience. Is it mandatory? No. You can ignore them.
You can inform your comunity about your progress. Is it a must? No. You can write "Done when it's done".
You can consider some of community ideas. Ot you can ignore their claims.
You can use some methods and instruments or you can ignore them.
Everything is optional, everything has consequences. One way or another.

Sorry, it means nothing. What's in your head is in your head until you explain it. In this particular example you can ignore all the numbers and just name it "Pre-release, Patch 5" - it will be more clear than v.0.5.00. For the audience I mean. As a part of said audience I can see this is not a release, but pre-release, and this is fifth patch. How much till the complete version? No clue. And if you add 17 more patches - it will look fine. Pre-release, Patch 23 look normal with no content. But 1.23 with no content raise a question - where is content if there is "1." in the version?

Shitpurple changed his project version nsming twice or thrice. Was there any reasons? Perhaps. Did that make things clear? No. What audience saw is numbers changing, no new content added. That means something is not right snd someone trying to do some wierd shit. So overall impact was negative. But of course he can rename his versions even everyday - it is his project after all.

Don't forget, you saw SC2 and LoL AFTER release. That means AFTER 1.0. And yes - nobody cares about numbers too much after release.
You're right, here in adult gaming, where initial release is often in fact early alpha those numbers matters. But don't forget about big brother - Early Access. There numbers matters too. In smaller scale, coz there you can't just add a few pictures and call it new version - audience won't tolerate it for long. And last years many clowns of a devs decided to milk their audience with infinite eraly access, changing numbers without adding content. Overall result - Steam got fed up with complains and changed ea policy and said project were forced to release as is, while their brilliant devs placed the "1.0" signs while no actual changes were made. Which lead to dissappointment and refunds.
Again - it is not some magic spell which guarantee your success. It is one of many small things you can use to your advantage.

There is no DRM, so no cracking required. As soon as somebody leaks it it will be there.

And they do it wrong, so that's their problem if they don't even bother to search any info about that.

There is no rule book for this and you can pick whatever method you want.

But usually the first number only represents the version, "0" means an early version, pre-release or Alpha/Beta test version, "1" means a post release or final version, a "2" would represent major changes in the game mechanics and redesign from the previous version.

The second number represents an update, it could be anything from new mechanics to additional content but never something that goes as far as to change the core of the game to make look like something new.

And the third number is for fixes without adding anything new to the game (both this and the second number can also be called a Patch by the way, what would make it even more confusing by using that wording instead ).

No it simple doesn't make any sense that the dev(s) have to predict the future so they can name each version until the final release is a way they can then release all content in a balanced quantity to not confuse the poor costumers and it makes even less sense that they need to create more content out of nowher because the are now at version 0.42.0 and they are still missing 48 versions to reach v1.0.

If you don't like the numbers then don't bother with them.

I ran into this issue while working on the Imouto Fantasy translation, people assuming 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 etc were some sort of percentage, when in fact 85-95% of the translation was done on 0.1.

I solved the problem by confusing everyone by releasing version φ, sometimes annoying problems require solutions that are annoying in turn.
