Yeah, I figured. With a half decent rig you probably wouldn't notice a problem with most of them, so wouldn't be looking at bit rate issues I guess. I need to do this on several other games too to get acceptable performance on my low spec machine, so plenty of devs who don't constrain max bit rate.Oof, the J and M files are a little insane, I didn't notice that lol.
The main reason for using higher bitrate (and a bit depth of 10) was the darker scenes which had clearly visible stairs and artefacts all over the place. I played with the values until I was happy and saved it as preset to use for every other animation^^
As a little side note, the list you posted is for youtube uploads, they're far from optimal since they prioritize fast streaming over image quality.
Yes I know those settings are for streaming, which I consider an adequate benchmark for AVN animations. Blu-Ray+ bit rates are overkill imo, we're not transcoding Avatar here after all.
There is certainly a trade-off between quality/bit rate etc. and you're particularly sensitive to artifacts etc. so probably tend to go high-end. Even Blu-ray doesn't generally go above 40 Mb/s though.
As you say, for proper optimization you'd have to tweak the settings for every video depending on lighting etc., but that's an awful lot of time and effort.
