I think it's your choice to spy on them the first time. I don't remember if you have other options to watch them without being in a relationship with them, although there are definitely times you HEAR them you can't skip.
Yeah, you can peek or not peek on that first night at the house, and peeking is better for any of the Heidi+Athena routes. I had been trying to remember if there were other instances later where it comes up, but it's been a while and I couldn't think of any. Perhaps something around the movie and pizza night where you can invite Mora in if setting up the HAM/MASH paths?
I skipped through the game a little last night out of curiosity to see what was possible. I don't really mind the first peeking because you don't have a relationship with them at that point.
