I just can't understand why so many countries use just the father's surname. Quite convenient for plot twists like this one, though. But seriously, it doesn't make any sense from a lot of perspectives

My issue with MC being a Burg is that it would take a big world and make it small; I have the same issue with Star Wars (I don't need Chewie in Revenge of the Sith, nor do I need Rey to be related to an established Force user, especially as it is long established that Jedi are celibate and using the Force is actually really easy for those with a high midi-chlorian count)As I'm surely is plainly evident by now, I have absolutely no problem if this were to be the case because I actually think it would be a very good twist for all that it could do to affect the dynamic of the story and the MC's relationships with certain characters.
I also don't think it's fair to say that predictability makes someone a bad writer. After all, this story is still incredibly engaging and intriguing in a lot of ways and people have very strong opinions and views on the characters and the story itself. To be able to do that is, for me, the mark of a great writer; to be able to make your audience care that much because they've put so much effort into crafting a rich story with characters that people have come to care for so deeply.
Of course we are allowed opinions. But you keep bringing up your displeasure with his writing in general. And that doesn't help anyone.I like you flip...but are we not allowed opinions now on what I personally think would be a terrible writing decision? (as it's the current topic of conversation). People repeat shit all the time here...
Some of the best and most popular pieces of pop culture have simple, formulaic plots without much in the way of shocking and surprising plots twists that you didn't see coming, but it doesn't make them any less great. I don't see how this game potentially having an "easy" plot twist brings it down in any way because plot twists don't make a story great, it's the quality of the story overall itself that defines its greatness.Agree with much of that yes, I wouldn't be here myself otherwise heh. But it's almost like it's a crime to actually cririsize him at times, like it's not allowed to call out a dev on bad designs, lazy writing, bad programing or anything else. I agree the majority of the characters are great, the story is interesting...just 'my opinion' making the MC a secret Burg would be cheap, lazy and the easy cop-out way of adding extra uneccessary 'drama' which I don't think this game really needs. There is enough going on already that is interesting.
As a Brit the whole faternity/sorority thing is fairly alien to me as well but, having seen a fuckload of American movies, I get the references.I tried once to play this game since it is loved so much. But, the setting "fraternity" really threw me off. There isn't anything like that that exists where i live. I wonder if anyone had the same difficulty, i am going to try it out a second time (i really want to like this game lol). It would really piss me off, if i still can't get on board.
There are many countries with different rules and traditions. In my opinion, using just the father's one is quite demeaning for women and their roots, also a double surname provides more info about your background and helps to differenciate people from others. But I'm not starting a discussion like the spelling war from yesterdayWhy? Marital tradition all over the world....

and when two people with double surname have a kid, the kid ends up with 4 surnames. using just one is easier to rememberThere are many countries with different rules and traditions. American stuff. If you've seen any amount of US films, you should be aware of how things are done in colleges there. Completely foerign concept to myself also, but it doesn't stop me enjoying the story/setting.
I think that's where my problem lies, i am more of Asian movie lover (C/K/Jdramas). The only movie i can remember having seen with that set up is one with Drew Barrymore i think..and Carrie lol. Well, gonna jump on it a second time, i hope i can get over it and enjoy the game. I can't be the only one not liking it! Thanks for the answers guys.As a Brit the whole faternity/sorority thing is fairly alien to me as well but, having seen a fuckload of American movies, I get the references.
The world of the MC already shrank when he found out that M&J were girlfriends, and it's an even smaller world when you consider that Jade is Tybalt's Mom, Tommy is Josy's step-brother, he formed a friendship with the brother of one of the main LIs, and the MC managed to interact with pretty much every major player at B&R in just his first few days.My issue with MC being a Burg is that it would take a big world and make it small; I have the same issue with Star Wars (I don't need Chewie in Revenge of the Sith, nor do I need Rey to be related to an established Force user, especially as it is long established that Jedi are celibate and using the Force is actually really easy for those with a high midi-chlorian count)
Well, to part-quote a line from a film series that fits into that category of "popular if not necessarily surprising"; good is a point view. Some people might consider the FF movies good whilst I consider them trash, and some people might not like the Marvel movies but I think they're great. Overloading any story with too many plot twists and shock reveals can bring it down, that's why Lost kinda went off the rails because not only was just about every character hiding some deep, dark secret, the island they were on had about 6 different mysteries as well so it all got a bit too much.I'm not generally easily pleased with 'what is popular'....it's popular for a reason, because it appeals to the general masses who usually don't know, or care to know any better. Like my exes son, he refused to watch or listen to anything older than he was. He loved popular stuff though...went with the crowd. His loss I guess. I'm a little harder to please heh. Just because something is popular, doesn't actually mean it's any good I'm sure you appreciate. Just good enough for the generation and demographic it's aimed at. Take modern horror coming out of Hollywood for example....(another opinion).
Jacob Rees-Mogg. 'Nuff said.In my country, those with a double barreled surname are considered to be pretentious twats.
It also doesn't solve the patriarchal issue because there is no set standard for which name goes first
Never Been Kissed and Carrie are both High School settings. For American college settings, you'd be looking at films like Animal House, Road Trip, Van Wilder, Old School, Bad Neighbors, even Monsters University.I think that's where my problem lies, i am more of Asian movie lover (C/K/Jdramas). Neither do I, it looks as foreign to me as a film based on Japanese High School with that system of activity clubs and stuff, but it's not that hard to get into it.I tried once to play this game since it is loved so much. Here oficially you just get 2, the first from both parents. But it's a funny and common entertainment learning your first 8 surnames (all from your grandparents), and even in some territories those 8 surnames can have some special connotations.and when two people with double surname have a kid, the kid ends up with 4 surnames. using just one is easier to remember
For me there is threshold beyond which it goes from 'yeah, that makes sense' to 'come the fuck on!'The world of the MC already shrank when he found out that M&J were girlfriends, and it's an even smaller world when you consider that Jade is Tybalt's Mom, Tommy is Josy's step-brother, he formed a friendship with the brother of one of the main LIs, and the MC managed to interact with pretty much every major player at B&R in just his first few days.
This is already a story playing inside a small field, so making him a Burg would just fit in to that.
Bugger, I was having a nice Sunday then you reminded me of the existence of that cuntJacob Rees-Mogg. 'Nuff said.
