I think growing up as poor as he was MCs idea of gift giving leans more towards doing something or creating something for someone else. Like how he learned to play his dad's favourite song on the guitar for Neil's birthday. I know he has the inheritance money now so buying a gift is more feasible, but I think his default would be to do something or get a small gift that has more meaning behind it.
