The setting feels like any generic US college minus the added prostitution and "big" time drug dealing drama. I would believe it if he's never been in the US. If he wanted to mimic US colleges, there would probably be more talk of financial aid for Maya

Yeah, I do suspect, if it's based on the US college system, her family wouldn't qualify for it. I have a feeling her dad is someone important, or at least the family is well-off financially so he's just a dick by not paying.
