Patrick's roughness with Maya and even a desire to maintain a level of control over his daughter for her sake would be just SLIGHTLY redeemable if it weren't for the fact that his biggest problem with Maya was that she was a lesbian. It's a hard life where you have to work more because imagine the cost of supporting Helen, not every health insurance will cover it and the psychological burnout of watching your loved one turn into a vegetable year after year. But none of that justifies him treating his daughter like shit, and doesn't justify his attitude because she prefers girls. Your daughter is a living person, not your property, and she has the right to decide who she will be with.
