I've always kind of felt that the MC is there to "save" certain, if not most, characters in this game and especially the main LIs because it feels like him being a part of their lives is helping them in some way.
- Sage - In a one-sided relationship where she isn't being given the physical and emotional affection she needs, the MC can show her what it's like to have someone like that and that she deserves to have someone like that.
- Bella - Suffering from some sort of emotional trauma which has caused her to shut herself off from people, the MC can break through that shell by being open, honest, and kind with her and will eventually help her to deal with this trauma which will help her to move on and be happy again.
- Jill - A rich girl who seems somewhat trapped in her circumstances and feels that people are only ever interested in her because of who she is, the MC can show her that there are genuine people out there who aren't motivated by money and possibly show her that she doesn't have to rely on it for her happiness and can choose her own future much like his mother did.
- Maya - An insecure girl coming from a repressive, religious household who's afraid to be herself, the MC can be a selfless friend to her in her time of need and show her unconditional affection which can not only boost her confidence but also make her feel that, even if she's lost the love of her parents, she can find others who will love and care for her and accept her for who she is.
- Josy - A girl with a veneer of confidence but who is scared of losing those closest to her, most likely caused by unresolved feelings over her parents' divorce, the MC can be a calming voice that can help her to see that things aren't always as bad as they seem and can possibly help her to resolve these fears about being alone.
Other characters like Quinn, Riona, Camila, Jade, Cathy, Envy, and even the DIKs seem like they could benefit from the MC in some way too and that he is something of "hero" figure in this story.
Of course, DPC can easily pull this rug from under us like he did with AL, but it at least has this "saviour MC" feeling as of now.
To be fair, DPC has never labeled themselves a "serious writer", that title has been bestowed upon them by the fans because AL dealt with some fairly gritty and hard-hitting themes that you don't normally see in adult VNs.
That's not to say they don't write well, because they do, but people will often take the "serious writer" title to mean that DPC is going to go down some very dark roads and really fuck with our emotions, which they could do of course, but they don't necessarily have to. Some writers stick to one genre of storytelling and other can span different genres, and I hope that DPC is the latter and won't turn this game into something similar to AL with a deeply tragic and hard-hitting finale, and instead give us something that is more upbeat and hopeful.
