She will likely be important plotwise either if the protagonist decides to have a relationship with her or not. The fact that Josie is the sister from one of the assholes (forgot the name) is evidence of this.

I think that was just done to bring more conflict with the MC does he continue on with Josy as they seemed to be getting pretty close and then he himself was confused when he told Maya about going to see Josy after spending the night with her.
