Before or after is less than a third of a whole evening. Seeing how needy Dawe and the others are about his time, chances like that don't come everyday. And he is not a tri-alpha officially, which means he doesn't get an automatic invite. That's why Sage wants to know who invited him.
But even if we ignore the cock blocking, inviting him to the party makes absolutely no sense if Mel and Sarah are just helping him keep his secret. They obviously knew Sage would be pissed off about it so why poke the hornet's nest? There is absolutely nothing suspicious in him staying away when he is not invited and Sage is mad at him. A confrontation only draws attention to the fact that he broke up with Sage and that is just going to make people wonder what kind of a guy breaks up with a girl like Sage. The more attention they draw to the circumstances of the break up the more obvious it becomes that Chad is gay.
But if they don't know that he is gay and Mel is trying to make a move before some other girl swoops in, then there is actually something to gain that might be worth risking Sage's wrath. Sarah even quite tactfully leaves Mel and Chad alone. It's just too bad Alex can't take a hint the clam jammer.
