That could definitely make sense, but then what was Bella thinking she needed James's forgiveness for?
The dialog from the script:

What Bella and Jill did was different "(But that...that was different!)" from her and the MC because she and Jill were just taking comfort from each other.
But she is finding herself sexually and romantically attracted to the MC.

Interesting discussion though, getting other viewpoints with angles I haven't thought of.

Asking forgiveness for what's going on with MC is what I imagine is what it's supposed to look like when playing Episode 3, but it could be about whatever happened that made James leave. Or, what she thinks might be keeping him away, assuming he has the ability to return.

I wonder if it could be the fault of one Mr. Stephen Burke?

We know from his repeated mentions that Stephen is sexually interested in Bella; whether or not he's actually sealed the deal with her is left ambiguous, but he does desire her. We also know that he is not above blackmailing people, and - depending on your interpretation of Maya's scholarship and the Mona incident - more than willing to coerce women into sex.

Could it be that the "different" situation that pushed Bella to potentially cheat on James was her being blackmailed into it by Stephen? If he had some form of dirt on Jade that wouldn't hold water in divorce court but would damage her reputation and used it to get his way with Bella, that could easily explain her breaking faith with her husband and feeling guilty about it while still considering it different from normal cheating.

That would make sense - this is before she kind of decides to act on her attraction to the MC in the pool scene.
So she's feeling guilty for making out with the MC in the library and asking forgiveness for that.

Agreed, I think there is a roughly 0% chance that Bella ever did anything with Stephen. There's no way DPC would have Bella blackmailed into sex like that.
In Jade and Stephen's argument we see that Stephen approached Bella to "spice up" their sex life but was shot down.
This was done without Jade's knowledge so Jade ridicules him for the attempt pointing out that Bella was already in love and has a wedding ring.

I think we are on the same page.
I was arguing that no-way would Bella have done anything with Stephen or Stephen/Jade.
The scene where they invited her over for dinner was in episode 1, so well before she got emotionally involved with the MC.
So I suspect she went over for a normal friend/work-associate dinner and then Stephen or Stephen/Jade together brought up the threesome thing and Bella got the hell out of there.. :)

I also said I don't think Bella/Jill actually had sex, but it wasn't just a single kiss.
Bella thinks to herself that it was: "(They aren't intimate with friends either...)"
So in her mind whatever she and Jill did it was being "intimate".
The dialog at the cabin pretty much shows exactly what I outlined previously.
Jill was at Bella's and they got tipsy and went to bed.
They ended up hugging and kissing ("a few very long kisses and hugs").
The kissing had nothing to do with sexual attration - they were getting comfort from each other in their shared pain and grief.
Though I am still hopeful that there can be a Jill and Bella throuple in the future.. :)

She's nowhere near in love with MC at that point. Besides the fact that Jade says that line regardless, things were still on the more carnal side with Bella and MC in Season 1. Episode 6 is when you officially jump on her path, and it's definitely when things start to turn.

And I agree with the others, Stephen has done nothing with Bella, and is definitely not blackmailing her.

The dinner with Stephen/Jade was in episode 1, she and MC weren't even doing anything then - much less developing feelings.
So I agree with you on all points.. :)

Whatever they saw was totally unexpected.
(I get narratively why DPC had the door be unlocked, it led to the episode dramatic finish. But it's pretty unlikely that Bella kept the door locked previously but the night she has 6 guests over for dinner she forgets to lock it.)

I think by far the best theory is the miscarriage and nursery. Maya and the MC saw a crib and nursery items.
It's possible that it wasn't a miscarriage, maybe the child was born but died as an infant. SIDS or something.
The dead child was a girl as well.
Remember when the MC joined Jill and Bella in the park when they were doing yoga early in the game?
After Jill left with Tybalt the MC was arguing with Bella because Bella was being very protective of Jill.
The MC said "she's not your daughter" and then Bella had this brief but sad look on her face, just a second or so.
