Because they were succumbing to the pressure and negative emotions because it "sucked" to be apart. Distance was exposing the weakness that they hadn't yet developed the strength to weather such adversity, but that's not an insurmountable issue.

Not really, because those were just quick fixes and never got to the core issues of strengthening their communication and their bond so that they're more in sync and don't let things get to them.

There problems aren't basic not understanding your feelings for someone isn't a basic issue it pretty big deal. Yes, they are basic, because understanding and strong connection is built on a foundation of good communication in order to build that. It's been shown time and time again that when having those deep conversations they realise a deep understanding of each other because they are similar in their thoughts and feelings. They just don't have those conversations often enough because they are, at the end of the day, still a couple of inexperienced teenagers navigating their very first relationship and this is pretty basic for that kind of relationship because people at that age are notoriously bad at this sort of thing.
Just because a couple grows apart does not mean they can't come together again, it just takes work, something they are still going to do because their earnest desire to do so is what resulted from their conversation. And they did in fact make it clear they will start after this night:
