But what the fuck is going on with the whole god thing? Just who or what is "God" supposed to be in this story?

You're right, the actual story is much darker

It's supposed to be more light-hearted than anything else and it has been so far there will be twists in the tale sure but nothing dark or as far fetched as crazy Bella been there and done that in AL let's move on.
