His family background, whether it be a family with a few million in the bank, earned over the last 2 generations, or an inherited wealth of billions accumulated over 200 years and retain through mutliple stock market crashes, shouldn't really affect how we see him. How he reacts upon learning about this background might.Sure, I got carried away. Thinking clearly now, you are completely right. We want the MC to remain relatable.
My point was about the B&R names not mattering all that much once you leave the college environment and venture out into the real world. At B&R, Jill's last name matters, that doesn't mean it matters everywhere and the fact that Rusty was rejected by the Preps supports that (if he were a hot girl, maybe things would've been different and s/he'd have got a room too.

I honestly don't get why people think that if the MC turned out to be Burg that it would be such a terrible thing.
If this letter has anything to do with him discovering who is mother's family are, it doesn't carry as much weight for the story if he turns out to be from a rich family that we don't know about, even if they are, in this fictional world, considered to be a more prestigious family then the Bs and Rs. Whilst he does still gain a link to a (presumably) prestigious family and possibly access to money, gaining the name of Burgmeister has a far greater impact because of its, and by extension his, link to the college as well as to certain other characters. The implications of this revelation would also have far greater resonance than if he were from some other random high society family, because it's all well and good that he's from that family, but being from a family so closely linked to the story is much more relevant.
DPC is a good writer and they've crafted a very involved story with characters that people have really come to love, but they're not Shakespeare, or Hemingway, or even Stephen King. This is, at the end of the day, a porn game based on the college/school comedy genre of movies, and whilst I do expect some twists and turns, and I fully accept that the Burg theory may not turn out to be true, it is not outside the realms of possibility and would work perfectly well without bringing down the quality of this game and its storytelling in any way.

But this is a self-contained story, and right now this college is his world and will be his world for the next 4 years. What happens after college isn't the concern, what happens now is, and as is so often the case at that age, everything seems much bigger than it is and a person's social standing means a lot and carries a lot of weight. Therefore, having the name of Royce and Burgmeister at this college carries some perks, like Jill being able to live in the Prep mansion and the campus authorities looking the other way so Rusty can get alcohol in to the DIK parties.
The purpose of potentially revealing the MC's heritage would be to affect both him and those around him as part of the overall narrative. It's not meant to have an affect on the player's perceptions, but seeing how it impacts the story is, and that's why it would be done, because it adds extra flavour/drama to the story.
Also, Rusty was turned away from the Preps because he didn't fit the snooty, preppy mould. Had he been more of an elitist snob as all other Preps seem to be, then he may have been accepted. So it's not that he was rejected for being a Burgmeister, he was rejected for not being like them.
I love this game, bought it on Steam and it was amazing, i even bought it as a present for a friend.
I will buy Season 2 too. (The wait feels long!)

His mother's family carries as much weight as the narrative gives it. No more, no less.
For all the talk about Burgmeisters and Royces being special, at the end of the day they have had a lot less say in the way things in the game world work than the Burkes have. The Episode 5 flashback made that perfectly clear. And it's not like learning Jill's last name has shown her a new light.
Why would the Lynette's family be any different? Even if the MC becomes the new heir of the Burgmeister clan, it will still be up to future episodes to establish exactly what that would mean; there's no existing role he would automatically assume. The name itself means nothing.
If DPC wants the MC to suddenly gain campus-wide notoriety, or plot-bending amounts of money, or Tybalt sucking up to him 24/7, he can do it. He'll do it via the dialog and actions of the scenes that establish this new status quo and its consequences. But whatever that narrative establishes could apply every bit as much to, say, the Warbucks as it would to the Burgmeisters.
So no, it's not that the MC being a Burg would be a terrible thing. It's just that it would be a pointless thing that insists on a bunch of unnecessary contrivances and coincidences to accomplish its mission. It's a redundant thing.

Well...heh. I guess those of us who have the mod installed will have to wait a few more days after the release of episode 6 to also update it. But who knows how many new pages appear during that time in this forum. That's what worries me a bit because I want to keep up with the hype and the discussions about it.
Although my last playthrough was on the Sage path, in which I did not alter anything with the mod, so I don't know if that counts to be able to play that route once the episode comes out without problems?

I wouldn't get my hopes if I were you. Jill is the slowburn romance of the game and I wouldn't expect a sex scene with her this upcoming update.
