No one's forcing you to be friends with Maya and Josy, you're reading a story about a guy (not you) who is friends (or lovers) with Maya and Josy. Those characters are integral to the linear story. And if you don't like the story (as is the case with all the arts - liking them is very subjective), just put the book down and pick up another one.
