It would depend on just what actually happened. The situation as described by Maya (and/or DPC) is illegal as Patrick has effectively stolen Maya's money, but as has been pointed out, the situation also doesn't make much sense. If it went to court, Patrick would be fucked. I can’t see what he’s doing is even legal.
If we want to imagine other possibilities that could make sense, Patrick could have created a set of contracts where Maya signed up for a large loan as a lump sum, then handed the money over to him. If Patrick also had a way to call in the loan early, that would leave Maya on the hook for the money unless she plays along. That could potentially be a legal contract, though it would be a very suspicious one.
Of course Maya clearly didn't know what she was actually signing up for, and it's likely Patrick lied to her about it which would invalidate the contract. But proving that isn't a trivial undertaking if we assume Patrick is willing to fight it out in court; judges don't like to void contracts if they can avoid it. So it would really come down to how vigorously Maya could contest it.
All the more reason for her to start raising even moderate amounts of $.; even if it can't pay the full tuition, it would give her options. And I hear someone needs handymen...
