Development 0.4 - #16

Hey everyone,

I'm a bit on the late side, but I'm still trying to keep you updated despite being a bit sick these past days.

I've finished the mini-game scene from the last dev log and I'm already halfway through the next scene! I also created a big 30 second animation for it, which I'll probably split up to add some dialogue in between. Overall, I'm pretty content with how it turned out. :)

There will definitely not be a release this year, if you hoped for one, like I did. Everything is just so time consuming, but in my eyes the quality is worth it, and since a lot of you guys encourage me to push the quality, I'm definitely focusing on that path!

The biggest scene is still on my to-do list, but I'll tackle it when the time comes. I'll definitely need some nice animations for it, but the interaction between animations and static renders is the goal, if you ask me.

Alright guys, that's it from me. I'm gonna go get some sleep, and I hope you're all doing great and having a not-too-cold week right now. Stay warm!

With love,
Your Panda

Dropped it for a while, replaying with the 0.32 update, feels different without the incest patch though. Read the thread about the patch said something about the plot not making sense if they are your mom/sisters, but would of worked as aunt/cousins. I mean they take you in like family when it is a female only household in a cyberpunk setting :\, made more sense to me if they were somewhat related to make that kind of sacrifice, and one that also comes financially.

Oh well, guess I'll experience it without it this time and see how it is.

It actually made perfect sense with them as mother and sisters. I suspect most of the people saying that never actually played it. Quite a bit was rewritten for it to make sense and there were some misunderstandings about it that led a lot of people to a lot of false assumptions about it.
Basically it rewrote it so the twins father was the MC's father with them all sharing the same mother. The dad got the MC in the divorce with a lot of toxicity around visitation which led to them not growing up together. It was a heavy but a very well done rewrite that pretty well made sense with only reasonable amounts of suspension of disbelief.

I have a thing for childhood friends' relationships
Me too (and as a result, I just adore Annie in Eternum).

Lucy without patch fits it well
I didn't play this before 0.3, so I can't speak to dialogue before then. But with what we see in 0.3, mother/sisters just doesn't fit. Aunt/cousins could, but even then it's a bit of a stretch IMO (Jane introduces herself to MC--that doesn't seem like something that would happen if they were related).

In fairness, the stated relationship is also a bit of a stretch: Lucy's MC's best friend (she's in love with him, and that's probably obvious to Anya and Jane, but that's another issue), Anya barely knows him (MC says this when he arrives at their house), Jane has never met him (inferred because she introduces herself). And based on his being Lucy's best friend (and/or crush), Jane's OK with him living with them indefinitely? Jane is extremely generous, Lucy is very persuasive, or both.

Now, if all of this has been rewritten to get out of the incest domain, fair enough. But it's been done thoroughly enough, IMO, that you'd really have to work at it to shoehorn that back in.

They weren't childhood friends though, would of made sense if the family knew MC and his family since he was a child and took him in after his family met with tragedy. They were just really good college friends, Lucy only know him for a few months. That was the wild part.

Jane introduces herself to MC
That didn't happen in the patched version. Instead she was just happy to be reunited with her son. Pretty much any holes you could think of had been filled. The "evil community modder" had done a lot to fill the holes.
Like the taxi driver at the beginning didn't tease Lucy and MC about dating as another example with the patch.
Anya actually knew the MC. They just weren't close because of visitation hell.
The bit where you can snoop on MC's phone on a conversation between Jane and her husband gets completely rewritten to a discussion between Jane and MC's father.

The patch made near perfect sense, at least as much as any incest AVN does.

If we are allowed to rewrite the dialogue significantly, we can make any AVN into an incest one. It is about how natural to make it work and how much changes needed.
I would say the early setting is pretty close to having divorced parents. But I am not sure if it is intended or not, as we can see the game is deviating from it.

That's why the relationship made sense to me back when I first played the game, but in the patch thread it seems like the talk was the update stories that I haven't played had some aspects and events that would not make sense if they were related or something like that.

Now playing over again without the patch the introduction of the characters now made no sense since they were taking in a random person that the daughter knew for a couple of months or maximum a year into their family, taking care of him physically and financially in a cyberpunk setting.

I'll just have to finish up the current version to know the full context to see whether I should keep following.

There's a few devs who make rewrites to make incest work.
That point goes into my earlier point that a lot of the problems people had was the made some incorrect assumptions about the patch and the evil community modder who wrote it, which I won't be expanding on out of respect to everyone involved.

hi DebatingPanda, 2 minor bugs from 0.3.3

chapter 1 - var not sets when you ass-slap lucy at the taxi outside the hospital (ch_01_07.rpy l:26):
this statement $ mcChoices.addChoice("LucyAssSlap") or this one $ ch1_las = True is missing
near the last part of ch2 (ch_02_17-Subway.rpy l:155), there is an unreachable line without that var (thats when i noticed the bug)
afaik no retro-active fix possible in this situation without asking the player again, or starting over once its fixed

chapter 3 swmming class - anya mini-game skip option is missing stuff (ch_03_04-Swimming.rpy l:1275):
Python:
            "Do you want to skip the mini-game? (You will automatically win.)"
            "Yes.":
                $ cons.add("AnyaSwimWonBoner")
                $ persistent.clickGame_1['result'] = ClickGameResult.WON.value
                return
compared to manually winning with 'if anya.pa(5)' (enabling choice: "Tease back!") you're missing all of this from stage "4a":
Python:
$ mc.Lust += 1
$ mcChoices.addChoice("AnyaSwimTease")
...
$ anya.increaseAffection()
tldr: do not skip the mini-game if you min/max anya

some concern:
the choice system is straight up horrible with ton of duplicated vars, the related lists are systematically converted into individual vars, the whole thing is very inefficient (everything is converted for any change or after loading a save) and makes no sense whatever
id recommend to entirely scrap the Choices/Consequences classes asap and just stick to some lists or something basic

Thanks for the bug reports! I added the missing choice to the first menu and adjusted the auto-win path for Anya as well.

I agree on the duplication on the variables. I made it like this in the early stages to keep better track of the choices and the later added game consequences. My intention was to basically replace all the vars with the respective index call at some point but that didn't happen yet. Will switch that out at some point, though.
The classes are only like custom wrappers, nothing I have to really scrap or anything, they don't harm anybody, yet :D

Well, I replayed and finished the game after dropping it around at least a year (without the family patch).

First of all I don't know if this is a bug or feature, but the clickables that mentioned in the tutorial stated that it would make a sound when it appears, but there are ones that made no sound at all and only some pauses when you are skipping.
(The route I choosed hard miss two clickables but still missed two)

Second, I said I went through the patch thread and thought there was some events/plot that made being related to them making no sense was actually fake news, I was one guyed. There was no such events/plot in all three chapters I played, in fact even without any relations it would of made more sense if they were childhood friends instead of just some friend that got real close in college.

The game was still as gorgeous as I remembered, the models were top notch and well rigged, but I was a bit surprised at what's new though to be honest since its been a while and I left the game when they were eating pizzas again. Anyways, this time without the patch, the story overall was acutally quite good with a strong mystery that hooked the reader wanting to know more, but the mental gymnastics required to make the relationships make sense was quite...let's just say lacking to a heavy reader like me. I understand devs wanting to avoid subjects due to the climate change, but avoiding it to the point they aren't even childhood friends was just making the read hard.

They were close enough to take MC into their family, take care of him, shelter and feed him.
They were close enough for MC to treat Lucy like a sister, and naturally pat her head even when she's a grown adult.
They were close enough for MC to bring Lucy to his grandma's house and have fond memories of them playing video games together.
They were close enought for Lucy to take care of MC when he fell into a coma.

but according to the data shown they were only 18~19, they were only college friends, which means they only known each other for months, maybe a year tops.

Its not really a deal breaker for me, but just saying the story needs to be stronger and feel more natural, it is a visual novel after all.

It wouldn't make sense for them to be this close after 1 year, totally with you on that. In my head it's about 3 years since it's not a typical college. I don't know the overall "American" college setup, hence why I mixed European and American school rules up to be more comfortable with it. So it is closer to a European-style vocational school, but I renamed it to "college" to make it sound more fitting and mature and also more relatable.

Ahh, that made more sense with that in mind, like I said although it wasn't a deal breaker but the constant mental gymnastic was a bit tiring. Thanks for the reply, enthusiastically waiting for chapter 4.

Hidden Counters
the dev is sneaky and has hidden a couple of timers through the game that alternate some dialog passed x time (and more rarely set a var)
ive made a script that detects start/stopCounter() and displays the time elapsed on screen
skipping is stopped once when a counter starts
hidden_counters.jpg

known issues in one scene due to the game script not calling stopCounter() in all situations:

should be compatible with any game version as long as start/stopCounter() keep working & being used the same way

Hey there,
despite saying in the last dev log that I was a bit sick, I actually wasn't able to work on the game for the entire last week (not this one, but the previous one). Covid got me for good after I sent the last dev log, but I'm getting back on track for the Christmas days.
I have been able to make some progress this week though, and I'll try my best to get as much done during the holidays as I can, while still meeting up with my family. :)
I'm also almost done with my 4th scene, just a couple more renders and another location, and it's finished. The 5th scene will be a bit more static and therefore easier to render. I still need to make it interesting enough so it doesn't end up being just dialogue with the same renders over and over again.
After that, I'm moving on to the 6th scene, which will definitely take a while to get right. It's an important one, and the 7th scene has already been done! So there are a little more than two scenes left. I'm quite confident that's manageable within the next month or two. I just need the time to focus on it.
That's it for today. I hope you enjoy your holidays with your family or friends (if you celebrate Christmas). Otherwise, I wish you all a very happy week and stay great!
