This question has probably been asked many times before by other noobs, but I couldn't find anything during the time I spent looking for answers:

I don't understand this game at all. Almost all enemies, save for the ones in the starting area, kills me in 1 or 2 hits. It seems that the only way to progress is to run past all enemies. People are saying that I need to progress the story to unlock levelling up. I have now ran all the way to the Cathedral and I still haven't found the NPC that let's me level up. Do I just keep evading enemies till I somehow unlock levelling up and then become strong?

You have to defeat at least one boss or trigger one of the other progression checks before you can level up at the library. The easiest boss is headhunting beast in rabbit hole (the first area). If you're at the cathedral, you could pull the lever in the catacombs. After that, check the library for Node. It sounds like you found an alternative exit to rabbit hole before finding the boss. Basically, you went way way off the "intended" path.

give your souls to prayer master to level up. Also the game isn't really centered on a standard RPG type progression, REALLY play to the bosses / monsters gimmicks
