When I install the game, it plays great just until the first modeling scene. Then the game ends with a "thank you" from the developers. Is this on purpose or where does the rest of the game go?

It's not odd at all...developers are here, lot of them are active and help with bugs (since most are found from players here), and even ones that don't post here still monitor F95 for bugs and player feedback.
