How difficult would it be for someone to continue the game secretly?

As in, the technological limitations. Is it simple to resume work on an RPGmaker game?

I did some digging trying to find the original artist. I still don't know who it is, but I did find a job posting for the game that had some art assets not in the game to be used as a reference. Here is the link in case anyone else feels like digging .

Last I checked from... I think was his Patreon, he's basically being sued by Nintendo and dealing with financial issues. So not able to work on a game if he could.

Could be wrong, been a few months and these sad and infuriating stories mix together.
Honestly he should have seen this coming a foot away. Should have made a parody game instead of using metroid as a name directly.

honestly its really easy to change it to bounty hunter: Sammy and call them Mocktroids or something fair use. Its a little much to expect nintendo to find and target a tiny game like this but i guess they have teams and lawyers looking for this more than their competitors. The only reason Injustice unlimited got noticed is DC decided to make their INJUSTICE world/games after he started.
